A farmer who could not bear to slaughter his animals anymore recently drove almost 200 miles to deliver his flock of male lambs to safety.
Goodheart Farm Animal Sanctuary in rural Worcestershire, took to Facebook to share the extraordinary story of Sivalingam Vasanthakumar, a farmer who had been raising animals for slaughter for more than 47 years before realizing the emotional toll it took on him.
“It was approaching autumn, the time I would usually take my lambs to market. I realized this year, I couldn’t do it. For many years, the issue of killing the animals played on my mind,” Vasanthakumar explained in the post on Goodheart Farm Animal Sanctuary’s Facebook page. “I used to unload sheep at the abattoir and witnessed first-hand how they would huddle in terror at the back of the lorry. They knew what was going to happen.”
Although the decision not to send his sheep for slaughter has cost him almost £10,000 in lost earnings, Vasanthakumar has no regrets.
“It’s a fantastic feeling,” shared Vasanthakumar. “Knowing they will never have to make that trip to the slaughterhouse is just wonderful.”
Fortunately, neither will Vasanthakumar.
The one-time-farmer-turned-vegetarian has decided to begin selling vegetable-based cuisine at a local market in his hometown of Totnes, Devon.
If that proves successful, Vasanthakumar plans to open a plant-based café in the near future.
